Fishing at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

A few years ago, I  took my children to the Buford Dam area of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) for a mother-daughter day out.  The Buford Dam area of Lake Lanier has some of the most breathtaking and magnificent views in all of Georgia. We got off to a late start that day, but managed to go to several locations in the area.    It was nice just to be outside in nature and get some fresh air and exercise.

Playfully we walked around the shores of Lake Lanier and watched the boats as they cruised by. We stopped at various overlooks to take in some of nature’s wonders and the picturesque, scenic beauty that we, who live in Georgia are so fortunate to have access to. Next, we had a lovely picnic by the lake in an area right by the Buford Dam, watched the birds and ducks, and then sat down and gently swung on the swings overlooking the lake. The food and company were great, but the natural scenery was even better. It was spectacular on that beautiful day, with the brilliant sun reflecting off the water’s surface, and the spiritually uplifting blue sky.

Then we went downhill on a long dirt and pebble road that led to the other side of the bridge (the Chattahoochee River side) to an area that has fishing, barbeques, restrooms and a large grassy area for picnics. My children were able to fish there (you can fish there without a license under the age of 16) and received pointers from some of the more experienced fishermen and women, who were there. They did not catch anything that day, as it only lasted about an hour and a half before we had to head back home. However, my daughters enjoyed it and so did I. It was a wonderful and memorable day, but the next time, we’ll be sure to leave earlier!

Of course, there are rules and regulations that need to be followed if you go fishing at the CRNRA. For instance, you must have a life jacket on if you want to step foot into the river to fish and naturally, you should always be a good steward of the environment. This is a very special part of Georgia’s natural beauty, an extremely important natural resource, as well as a fabulous recreational area. Therefore, everyone should do his or her part to be certain that it will be with us for generations to come.
